Better Through Books: Exploring the African Heritage Diet with Oldways

Tuesday, March 237:00—8:00 PMOnline

Join us for a unique culinary event as part of our Better Through Books: Healing Community Together Community Read as we explore the African Heritage Diet with Oldways.

Sarah Anderson, Heritage Diets Curriculum Coordinator at Oldways, will present a live cooking demo of an African Heritage Diet dish and then provide a mini presentation about the nutritional importance of traditional African Heritage Diets, their cultural and culinary history, and how bringing this knowledge to light empowers community to explore healthful, heritage diets.

The African Heritage Diet is a healthy, traditional eating model based on the common threads and foodways of African American ancestors. This diet recognizes the distinct flavors and traditions of four major regions of the African Diaspora—West and Central Africa, the American South, the Caribbean, and South America. The core of Oldways’ African Heritage & Health program is their six-week cooking class series called A Taste of African Heritage, and a seven-week series for kids called A Children’s Taste of African Heritage. These curricula blend nutrition and cultural history with delicious cooking techniques to celebrate African heritage in communities across the country.

Registration is required; Zoom information will be sent in your registration confirmation.

Thanks to our community co-sponsors and the Friends of the Belmont Public Library to make this amazing series of events possible.
