In recent years as you’ve grown older and friends and family have died or moved away, has your support system become smaller? Have you started to worry about who you’ll reach out to and how you’ll manage if you experience changes in your health or an injury? These concerns are heightened by the fact that more and more people are living alone, some by choice and many by circumstances. Currently, there are close to a million “kinless seniors” also known as “solo agers” or “elder orphans” spread across the US. While many people want to maintain independent living as long as possible, they also want to avoid feelings of isolation and loneliness, both of which can have negative effects on emotional and physical health. It can be challenging to meet people with whom you share interests and concerns and overwhelming to identify resources that could help you continue to age in place. There is much to be said for discussing these issues with older people who live in your community. Potential benefits include socialization, support, fresh ideas, a sounding board, and the possibility of practical assistance when it’s needed. Please join our new group, Kinship for the Kinless.
